Happy Birthday, Marine Corps

The United States Marine Corps has a unique founding story.

Originally established on November 10, 1775, by the Continental Congress, the Marine Corps consisted of two battalions raised for ship-to-ship fighting, as well as security and landing forces.

At the end of the Revolutionary War, the Marines were disbanded, only to be re-established by Congress as permanent and standing military branch under the Secretary of the Navy in 1798.
